There’s NOTHING like the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn in December! It’s a must see if you love the holiday decorations. Here are a few things you might not know about this magical neighborhood during Christmas.
1. The neighborhood has nicknames
- King of Christmas Lights
- Dyker Lights
- Con Ed’s Warmest Heartthrob
- The Undisputed Capital of Christmas Pageantry
No matter what you call it, you’ll no doubt see the most extravagant Christmas light displays you’ve ever seen.
2. The tradition of Christmas Lights in Dyker Heights started in the 80s
Lucy Spata started the Christmas Lights tradition when she moved to the neighborhood in the 1980s. She decorates her house to to carry on the tradition her mother had started. In fact, all the angel decorations you see here are in honor her mom’s memory.
3. The neighbors didn’t always like the lights

4. Dyker Heights boasts the largest Santa in all of New York City
It’s true! The 15 foot tall Santa can be found at the Polizzotto home. The display was commissioned by Mr. Al Polizzotto who was on remission from cancer. His hope was to bring joy to the neighborhood and he sure did that. And it continues to this day!
5. Wonder how many people visit each year?
Over 100,000 flock to the area every year!
6. When do they hang the lights?
Most families hang the lights right after Thanksgiving and keep them on until the beginning of January.
7. How many lights are on display?
It’s estimated that it’s millions of lights!
8. Dyker Heights during Christmas has been on TV

9. When is the best time to go?
You’ll want to go after dusk to see the homes in all their glory.
10. How do I get there?
Sure you could take the train, but that involves a 15 minute walk and who wants to do that during winter?
